The official launch of this year’s Food & Fun Map was a success on Saturday, June 5th at the grand opening of the Petrolia Farmer’s Market. The maps are out in circulation with an increase in participants this year. It is a colorful array of a variety of businesses ranging from fruits & vegetables, meats, fun, fairs, wine, maple syrup, honey, farmer’s markets, alpacas and more! For a copy of the map, you can visit your local library, your municipal office, the Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce, Sarnia Tourism, Sarnia Lambton Business Development Corp., the LFA office, the County Buildings, Stokes Advertising and many more places too numerous to mention.

Betty Jean Crews, OFA President, will be touring Lambton on Tuesday, June 29th stopping at a few different places. The Lambton Dairy BBQ at John Deelstra’s will be her first public stop and you are welcome to attend the BBQ and visit with Betty Jean there. There will also be a round table type meeting with her later in the afternoon. Fore more information on the tour, please contact the office.

The Lambton Federation is working on the newest version of the food and fun map. We hope to have it launched by May 1st or shortly after with deadline for submission of March 1st. If you are interested in advertising on the map, please contact the office for an application form or download from our website. The cost to advertise will remain the same as in the past years, being $100.00 which includes the advertisement on the map website, www.locallylambton.com. The map has become a very valuable tool for farm gate businesses, tourism in Lambton County and for educational purposes. We hope you will participate! The only stipulation is that you are a farm gate business and that the product you sell is locally grown or manufactured.

There will be an open meeting on Thursday, January 21st at the Wyoming Legion. Everyone is welcome to attend this meeting and find out more information about the map, sign up and pay your $100.00 fee that evening.

Approximately 160 people attended the federation banquet in Wyoming on Friday November 20th. Jay Campbell, Retired Meteorolgist from the ‘A’ Channel was the guest speaker. He entertained, informed and predicted what the weather might be like for local farmers for the upcoming year.

Constable Reurink spoke on their efforts to get the Children’s Safety Village up and running in Lambton County. Lambton is one of the last counties to have this teaching tool for various safety aspects in the community. If you would like to donate to the costs of this project, please contact the federation and we will put you in touch with the right people.

Seven scholarships were handed out at the banquet. The well deserving recipients were Nicole Stewardson who won the $500 Bell scholarship; Alyssa Straatman who won the $250 Bell; Tyson Cooper who won the Kerrigan $200 scholarship; Colleen McLean who won the $250.00 Abraham scholarship; Caitlin Steven who won the $500 Stewardson scholarship; Karly Campbell who won the Wakefield $500 scholarship and Denise Syer won the $500 Anderson scholarship. Congratulations to all of them as they work hard at post-secondary schools.

We congratulate Kevin Forbes, our incoming Lambton Federation President for 2009-2010. Ron MacDougall was elected 1st Vice and Chris Williamson elected 2nd Vice. The following directors were nominated and elected: Ken Dunlp, Tony Beernink, Dennis Bryson, Don Dunlop, Debbie Gilliard, Doug Krall, Brooke Leystra, Don McCabe, Bill Milliken, Kathy O’Hara Wilson, Harry Buurma, Joe Dickenson. We are still looking to fill vacant spots for Warwick, Plympton-Wyoming and Dawn-Euphemia. If you are interested in filling these positions, please contact our office for more information. George Dickenson retired as director and Vice-President after many years on the board. We wish George well and thank him for his support and dedication to agricultural and federation concerns over the past years.

Delegates recently attended the OFA convention where Betty Jean Crews was once again elected President for OFA. Lambton’s own, Don McCabe was also elected for a second term as Vice-President. Congrats Don!

Plan on attending the upcoming BDO Seminar and visit our booth at Podolinsky days. More information is on the upcoming events.

A committee has formed the “Lambton Agricultural Hall of Fame Association”. More information on the nomination process be posted on our website very shortly.

Lambton Kent Agriculture in the Classroom’s (LKAITC) new Healthy Eating Club pilot project is scheduled to launch in two area schools this coming October, November and December. The two sites chosen for this project include London Road Public School in Sarnia, Ontario and Thamesville Area Central School in Thamesville, Ontario.

These clubs will target students in grades 6, 7 and 8 and will have a direct connection to those grades’ health curriculums. The goals of the clubs are to promote healthy eating while allowing students to try new things, to learn where their food comes from, and to understand the importance that agriculture plays in everyone’s daily lives.

Each of the pilot clubs will meet twice a week for a period of 8 weeks which totals 16 forty-minute sessions. Each week will focus on a specific food group and topic. One session per week will involve hands-on food preparation and sampling. The other session will have a producer/commodity/volunteer group delivering a positive message around the healthy eating of Ontario farm-grown products. Recipe cards and other resource materials will be organized in individual student binders which will become a personalized take-home resource book for each member of the club.

LKAITC is working together with associated project partners including: Lambton Kent District School Board, County of Lambton Community Health Services, Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit, local producers and commodity groups and volunteer organizations. Funding for this project was provided in part by Ontario Agri-Food Education Inc.’s Healthy Eating Program.

The LKAITC committee is operated by volunteers as a non-profit organization delivering successful agricultural programs to local school children. Increasing awareness of the agri-food industry continues to be the mandate of the committee. Some of our projects include: school resource kits which has grown into a cooperative effort with the Science Education Partnership; implementation of the Spring Days (in Lambton) and Harvest Days (in Kent) where students explore agriculture by journeying through different agricultural stations; and, our annual gala fundraising dinner called ‘A Taste of Lambton-Kent’ which is always a success thanks to our strong supporters.
